What a 20-person team actually pays

Example: a café, retail store or trades crew with 20 rostered staff, needing scheduling, a time clock and team chat. (Under 10 users? Connecteam is free — genuinely.)

Where each tool genuinely wins

No product is best for everyone. Here's where Connecteam is strong, and where RosterMate makes more sense.

Choose Connecteam if…

  • You have 10 or fewer staff — the free Small Business Plan includes all hubs and features, and it's genuinely one of the best free deals in the category
  • You want an "everything app" — training courses, employee recognition, document storage and checklists on top of scheduling and chat
  • You value a polished, highly-rated mobile app — Connecteam sits at 4.7/5 on Capterra with a huge global review base
  • You need a true auto-scheduling engine and don't need NZ payroll depth or IRD filing

Choose RosterMate if…

  • You're past 10 staff and don't want to buy 2–3 separate hubs in USD — one flat NZD price covers everything
  • You want NZ payroll done properly: Xero NZ, PayHero, Smartly, Crystal and built-in IRD payday filing with NZ bank batch files
  • You need leave handled under the Holidays Act — alternative leave, family violence leave, NZ public holiday rates on rosters and timesheets
  • You value local support — a Kiwi answers the phone, and setup & training are free
  • You staff events — capacity-based shift bidding with waitlists is unique to RosterMate

Our verdict

Connecteam is an impressive product with real breadth — and if you're a micro team of 10 or fewer, its free plan is genuinely hard to argue with. But the pricing model changes character the moment you grow: scheduling, chat and HR live in separate hubs, each with its own USD base fee, and the Advanced Operations hub alone lands around NZ$80+ a month before you've added a second hub or crossed 30 users. For NZ payroll, the story is thinner still — a Xero sync with no allowances support, no PayHero, Smartly or Crystal, and no IRD payday filing.

RosterMate takes the opposite approach: one product, one flat $8 NZD per employee, every feature included — rostering, time clock, leave under the Holidays Act, messaging, events, forms, and the only built-in IRD payday filing in this category — built and supported in New Zealand. Try both: Connecteam's trial is 14 days, ours is 30. We think you'll stay.

RosterMate vs Connecteam FAQs

Common questions from teams comparing the two.

Connecteam sells its product as three separate hubs — Operations (scheduling and time clock), Communications (chat and updates) and HR & Skills — and each hub is priced separately in USD. On annual billing each hub is US$29 (Basic), US$49 (Advanced) or US$99 (Expert) per month for the first 30 users, with extra users charged on top. If your team needs scheduling, chat and HR tools, you're buying two or three hubs, each with its own base fee. The Advanced Operations hub alone is roughly NZ$80+ per month at current exchange rates before you add another hub. RosterMate is one flat $8 NZD per employee per month with everything included — no hubs, no base fees.
Yes — and honestly, it's a great deal for micro teams. Connecteam's Small Business Plan is genuinely free for up to 10 users and includes all hubs and features. If you have 10 or fewer staff and don't need NZ payroll integrations or IRD payday filing, Connecteam's free plan is hard to beat. The catch comes when you grow past 10 users: paid plans are per hub in USD, and features like live GPS tracking move to the Expert tier at US$99+ per month.
Only partially. Connecteam has a Xero integration that syncs hours, time off and overtime, but it doesn't support allowances — those have to be handled manually in your Xero pay run. There are no integrations with PayHero, Smartly, iPayroll or Crystal Payroll, and no IRD payday filing; Connecteam's other payroll integrations are US-centric. RosterMate integrates with Xero NZ, PayHero, Smartly and Crystal Payroll, exports to iPayroll, and includes built-in IRD payday filing with NZ bank batch payment files.
Connecteam is a global product with no NZ-specific compliance engine — it has time-off management, but nothing built around the Holidays Act. RosterMate is built for New Zealand: NZ public holidays are built in, public holiday rates calculate on rosters and timesheets, and leave management follows the Holidays Act including alternative leave and family violence leave.
Connecteam serves 80,000+ customers worldwide from global support teams, with no NZ office. RosterMate is 100% NZ owned and operated with NZ-based support — the phone is answered directly, emails are answered within an hour during business hours, and setup and training are free. If you want someone in your timezone who understands NZ payroll and the Holidays Act, that's RosterMate.
Yes. RosterMate includes free setup and training, and our AI onboarding can import your staff list from a spreadsheet or export in minutes. RosterMate is month to month with no lock-in, and the 30-day free trial needs no credit card — so you can run it alongside Connecteam before you commit.
